Tibetan Youth Camp Blends Tradition, Horseback Riding

Twenty-nine children registered for the camp on August 8th, 9th, and 11th, spending three days exploring Tibetan culture. The Lha Tibetan Heritage Society, led by Pema Namgyal, organized the Mini Tibetan Summer Camp, which took place at both a local yak farm and Horses of the Sun Ranch. The three-day event was a huge success, bringing together families for a memorable weekend of tradition, nature, and community.
25 children participated at the Yak Farm. Campers started their day with meditation, yoga, and a nature hike. After the storm cleared, they enjoyed a scavenger hunt and a campfire with s’mores. Tulku Jampel Wangpo led sacred prayers and a sangsol, or smoke offering puja. The children learned about Tibetan pilgrimage traditions through symbolic prostrations, made play-dough figures inspired by the story of the Four Harmonious Friends, and tried their hand at making Momo and Tsampa, as well as Tibetan poetry and dance.
14 children participated in Horses of the Sun; campers focused on horseback riding, which was a new experience for many. They also spent time with alpacas and ponies, learned archery, and listened to farm owners Sonja and Uwe talk about the evolution of horses. Two elders shared moving stories: OFT Board member Mr. Jurme Wangda spoke about escaping Tibet on horseback and saying goodbye to his horse, while CTC Chair Mr. Sampel Lhalungpa told of his father’s escape and how horses were cared for in Kalimpong, North India.
Ottawa Friends of Tibet and donor Sampel Lhalungpa funded the camp, while Pema’s family and other families contributed food and activity supplements. Organizers thanked the culinary team, fire keepers, potluck cooks, and youth counsellors for their support. Pala Jurme Wangda hopes the camp will become an annual tradition, and Ottawa Friends of Tibet is ready to support future events. Sonja and Uwe also said they would welcome the group back and are open to offering more riding lessons.
The Lha Tibetan Heritage Society thanks all the sponsors, donors, cooks, teachers, and volunteers who made the weekend possible.
